Nemu Takara, Neuhaus and Mephisto's secret Laboratory: Theories.

You know, I had another weird theory about Nemu Takara.

So...I always thought Nemu Takara was a kid from the future, maybe even Shura's kid. Because his whereabouts are a mystery, and Mephisto couldn't be more coy about it. The kid doesn't come from anywhere, and has no ties to the True Cross Order. Nemu is a big unexplained mystery.

But what if he's a kid from this timeline, with an undocumented birth?

Remember that Neuhaus's wife was pregnant? She dies during the blue night, and Neuhaus is seen carrying her dead body away. It was assumed that both his wife and child perished during the Blue Night but what if Neuhaus was able to save his child? He was an expert in demon elixirs, and the regeneration of the dead flesh. It sounds macabre, but that was Neuhaus's specialty in section 13.

What we do know.

After the Blue Night, Neuhaus continued his research in a secret lab, suspended in time from the old section 13. Mephisto created this secret lab, no doubt with all the old research intact, even though he said it was "destroyed." (Mephisto lets Lightning peruse all the research with Ryuji later on.)

So, the entire section was saved, just compartmentalized in a time void, with Neuhaus in complete control of it.

Is Takara Neuhaus's kid? Maybe?

Neuhaus probably asked Mephisto for a favour (which usually results in less than favourable results). What if Mephisto let Neuhaus keep his research and experiments intact to save his wife and child? What if Mephisto agreed, under the condition that he promised to continue the work on secret exorcist weapons? New demonic vessels? What if the child was born with a terrible curse?

It would stand to reason, that Neuhaus's child would suffer from an affliction similar to Yukios. Satan's temptaint enters and escapes through the eyes. During the Blue Night, Satan possessed Neuhaus and his blue lightning jumped from Neuhaus's eye, killing his wife. (Regardless, Neuhaus must be scary strong, because he didn't die, his body must be on par with the Grigori Nephilium).

A temptaint from Satan expresses itself through the eyes. Yukio's temptaint was not as strong as Takara's, because he caught it from Rin, who was only a half-demon child of Satan. It only affects one of Yukio's eyes. Takara got the full force of Satan himself when he attacked his mother during the Blue Night. Therefore, both of Takara's eyes were affected.

When Takara opens his eyes, he could unleash Gehenna's full power on whomever tries to harm him (similar to Yukio only waaay stronger.) He might also be a portal directly into Gehenna, it's not clear. This is why Mephisto keeps Takara asleep with a stuffed rabbit familiar. The kid can't open his eyes, or Satan sees everything. (Yukio is lucky that he can patch one of his eyes.)

Shima saw the Satanic temptaint when he tried to attack Takara during the Illuminati arc. Takara was immune to the black power of Armumahel because, like Rin and Yukio, he is indirectly a child of Satan and is immune to black, blue, and red flames.

If Mephisto was looking for a superweapon, Rin pales in comparison to what Takara offers. Rin and Yukio, as a matter of fact, are just a big distraction. Satan is so focused on those two that he might not have noticed Takara exists.

Why else would Mephisto take a special interest in protecting Takara? The kid is family. Neuhaus has a very German name and has a temptaint associated with resurrecting dead things. Death is the kin of Time.

Neuhaus, I think, is Mephisto's son. And Nemu Takara is Mephisto's grandson.

What other research did Neuhaus undertake? We have no idea, but we know that Mephisto is in desperate need of a new vessel for Satan (maybe even himself) and if my theories on that are correct. It has something to do with Shiro. (Did Shiro die, or did he get the Drac Dragulescu makeover? Maybe Neuhaus found the way to upload the ego and soul of a person to a new body without that gruesome head transplant crap. But who knows.)

Drac Dragulescu's research may appear advanced, but I bet it's leaps and bounds behind Neuhaus's. Mephisto, after all, is just as wealthy as the Illuminati. And the experiments never stopped. Drac had to start over with only one completed replicant, and the Illuminati lab was rebuilt (highly suggestive that it's hidden somewhere in or under the Garden of Armahara and guarded by the Uzai. (This is why Granny Shemihaza left with her child and grandchild to be under Mephisto's protection in Japan.)

Anyway, is Takara Igor Neuhaus' kid? Thoughts on this theory?

Happily.

For starters, combat aircraft do exist, however they aren't often used, as the setting doesn't really have the large-scale conflict that would make aircraft deployment viable, especially given the unpredictability of a phenomenon called "Miyazaki Storms." If you don't mind me hijacking your ask, I'd actually like to take a moment and talk about them, because they inform a great deal of the setting's world.

Miyazaki Storms, which arise and dissipate with frightening randomness due to the instability of earth's climate post-long-war and the quantum instability of the Miyazaki Particles that define them, they are among the greatest hazards faced by the city states of the modern world.

thunderstorms which often stretch for miles end to end, with the largest ever reported measured 2000 kilometers at its peak. However, these are no normal cyclones. Thanks to the ecological devastation and esoteric fallout of the Long War, these Miyazaki storms are contaminated with Miyazaki particles and other exotic contaminants that make them extremely toxic, and affect biological tissue and electronic systems in unusual (mostly negative) ways.

One of the almost-universal truths of these storms, however, is that they effect a near-total comms blackout within them, allowing almost no signal in or out of the lethal cloud. In fact, the only communications hardware known to pierce their gloom is the communications network of the Knights, though the exact reason why is unknown to all outside of the organization.

All too often have groups of Tinmen, lured too far from a city-state by the promise of Old World Tech, gone to investigate an installation, only to be caught out by a Miyazaki Storm and never be seen again, save perhaps for their mechs being salvaged by wandering nomads in the years to come.

However, perhaps more disturbing than those who lose their lives to being caught out in a storm are those who don't. Upon rare occasion, people will be caught in a storm without the proper safeguards and protection that a city-state provides and survived, though many wish they had not. Mutations and radiation sickness are common, and in rarer cases, there have been reports of unexplainable, seemingly paranatural phenomenon, which cannot be definitely confirmed or disproven. However, given the extreme rarity of such events, it is a subject mostly relegated to fringe thinkers and conspiracy theorists. Also, some corporations have theorized that, with sufficient technology, they would be able to harvest Miyazaki particles from the storms, giving them a source that isn't reliant on finding old world caches. However, the only power making any significant progress on that front is Kultivar, the megacorporation currently in charge of the city-states of Lagos and Kano.

As far as tanks go, they do exist, but they are largely discarded in favor of Frames, partially due to the conceit of being a mecha setting, but also because the adaptability and mobility of Combat Frames make them more of a viable choice than a strategically limited tank, in a world where all-out war is unheard of.

Having Baela as a partner means you have someone that has your back 24/7. She is dedicated to you, so much so, that she would rather see the world burn than sacrifice you to save it.

She loves reading to you. That's how you drift off to sleep most nights, listening to the sound of Baela's voice as she recounts the words from the book (changing the story whenever she thinks its too boring).

Okay. She might be a little flight/floating obsessed after her very brief stint as Ginryumon. She might have missed floating more than she cared to admit. She could fly.

Just not as Dracomon apparently.

Chival took a deep breath and let go of the cave wall. The Autobot digimon flipped until she was facing straight down trying to replicate the urgency that had allowed her to digivolve… She only got about halfway to the ground when she had to shift to gliding to avoid Ratchet’s servo. Even with scolding on his glossa in cybertronian, Chival paid more attention to the lack of change in her form. She glided until she landed on the human kids’ couch.

The scolding passed through one ear hole and out the other as she was more forced on why she couldn’t replicate digivolving again. It had only been a day since Chival had managed to, well, transform. My Rating: 4.75

Right off the bat I liked the writing style. I felt like Eames did a really good job with the flow of the story. Nothing felt stilted or too juvenile. The book didn’t feel robotic or like there was too much exposition. There wasn’t this telling-not-showing element to it. But the language felt so effortlessly beautiful as I read it.

The magic system and plot were so unique. I loved the idea of hearts having to be used to make magic. I also loved the element of the Magic House as an extension of Sylvester. The magic felt like it had stakes, like it had sacrifice. Like something had to be given up in order ot have the magic. I felt like there was some real weight to the decisions made and that the conflict in the book, that drove the plot, felt real and well paced out. I felt Foss’ fear and dread, I felt her panic and her worry. I felt her father’s worry and the worry of the people around her. This felt like a real consequence of magic and it felt like something more realistic. That the poorer people on the outskirts of the kingdom were sacrificed for the prosperity of the elite closer to the center. It felt like it was an allegory for something real and it felt well thought out.

I also like the way Foss was portrayed, she was scared and confused but determined. She wasn’t dong what she was doing just for other people. She didn’t have to be this selfless person driven by just altruism. She’s allowed to do something that protects herself, she’s allowed to be scared for her own well being and she’s allowed to do things to save herself. Not only does she not need someone to save her, and she’s taking action to do it on her own, but she doesn’t need someone to save. Sure, she’s seeking out this problem that’s plagued her town for a long time, but she’s driven by her own feelings, her own peril.

And the way other people react to this, how other people think of this thing that’s happening, it feels…evocative. There is something in the complicity of the inner villages to this awful thing happening to the outer vilages that makes it worse. And it builds a male lead that isn’t a killer but takes parts of a person that are vital to someone feeling whole. The magic system works because it isn’t a source of all knowing power. Even with the magicks there’s no ultimate power. There’s an uncertainness to it that is just right. It’s not so uncertain that the magic system is unexplained, but it has a realistic sense of being hard to explain and there almost a physics element to it that I thought was really unique.

Also an animal companion? Amazing. I loved him.

I loved the way the victims’ are portrayed. They’re not helpless or hapless. They’re angry and sad and hurting and they’re allowed to me. They have stories of being victimized and being unable to stop it and they’re allowed to have different emotions. Different people have different amounts of their hearts taken, and there is this general attitude of the narrative that they’re all victims. I thought the way the other victims interacted with each other was very realistic. Some believed no matter how affected, everyone was valid, some who had their whole hearts taken dismissed Foss’ pain. And the narrative interrogates that.

I think there’s also an interesting element here of how ensorcellment impacts both sides, and the wildness of magic where Sylvester, the MMC, can’t control a lot of it. He doesn’t want to be what he is. But him being the only boy puts him in a position where he feels obligated. He doesn’t have humanity in the same way Foss does, and I think that was nicely done too. I think Foss’ struggles with what she feels for him, and her active attempts to figure out what is real and what is because of the spell she’s under was a really unique flip to it. The author acknowledges that part of it, and acknowledges that Foss’ predicament is in a gray area. She isn’t sure what is and isn’t real.

While you really see more development of the villains after the 45% mark, I think it was done really well. They felt like real motivations. They were taught that it was either their survival and the kingdom’s survival, or the hearts of a few. They were taught to sacrifice the few for the good of the many. That’s what makes a good villain, in my mind, that they have motivations thatm ake sense and that are almost understandable. Like I can see how the villains Darius, Clarissa, the other sisters, are convinced of their integrity and that what they’re doing is right. Sylvester has conflict that makes him an effective morally gray character. He loves his family who does wrong, but he desperately tries not to do the wrong they do. They’re convinced they’re in the right, that they’re superior and what they do is something that should earn them gratitude. It makes them more frightening.

I can’t say enough how much I love that Foss is so flawed. She’s angry and resentful. She’s described as “ugly” and that’s not something that has to be fixed. She’s mad that she’s ugly, yes, but she’s more so mad at the way the world treats her because of that. And her development because of that adds to her characterization in a few ways but without she still stands on her own. And when Foss is driven to kill, it impacts her, she experiences revulsion at it and her trauma feels real and grounded. She doesn’t have to be this beautiful bad ass.

I LOVED her relationship with her dad. It was adorable. He loved her so much and she loved him. He did what he could for her but stepped back when she needed him to. It meant a lot to see such a nice and loving dad in a fantasy book. I loved it.

Also, the slow burn?!? Sylvester and Foss? When he sees the foss flower and she calls it beautiful and he says that it fits her well?!? Like, way to make me kick my feet and sob at the same time. Oh my god. I love that stuff. I Eat. It. Up.

And the themes of how government/governing bodies control what their people know, understand, and how they view the world? And how easy it is to lie and change the narrative by limiting outside information? So well done.

And I don’t usually like sex scenes/love scenes in book. It just feels awkward and weird for me personally. But this one I loved and was written really well. It felt like the pay off was not only well built up to, but well suited to the characters and the story. And I couldn’t stop the whole, giggling, blushing, looking away, covering my mouth thing. I so rarely get that in books.

I was GRIPPED for the ending. And I loved it so much. I loved it.
